Leaders of 189 countries agreed to achieve the Millennium Development goals before 2015. Many countries are working towards achieving these goals. Even to achieve some of the goals like 'End poverty and Hunger', 'Maternal Health', 'Child Health' is a struggle for many countries. To achieve these goals, it is found that the participation of the people in the development activities at the local level is the key. The understanding of these goals by the representatives of local governments will lead to speedy achievement of the goal.
If many local governments gear up their work towards ensuring good education to children belonging to their region, giving good maternity care, ensuring quality health support will surely address overall development. In Kuthambakkam, we emphasis the development in this pattern and also recommend the same to other panchayats through the Panchayat academy. We have developed packages to address these issues. We work closely with organisations which take Millennium Development Goals like food for all, Education to all and Women and Child health.
The new panchayat raj came into existence since 1993, although it is in existence for more than a decade across the country (Except the state of Jharkhand) there is no significant growth among the panchayats to function as a local self-government. There are supporting institutions, NGOs and Govt. departments to work for making the panchayats to deliver the constitutional mandates. In this situation, if there are models which demonstrate total development by panchayats, it will create ripple among the other panchayats by showcasing itself. |
