Through SHGs, it's advised that the separation of waste should be done at house itself. In every house there should be a provision to collect non-degradable waste separately. The cooking waste and other degradable waste should be put into a pit, which could be collected by the panchayat once in a month.
The Kuthambakkam panchayat is planning for a local level Solid Waste Management system.
